Team finds computer vulnerability, urges safeguards
Led by Associate Professor Linke Guo and Ph.D. student Sihan Yu, a research team has discovered that a well-known method of intercepting and extracting sensitive data can be used outside of a laboratory setting to hack multiple computers simultaneously. The hack would begin by installing malware to generate signals containing sensitive encoded information that can be sent to a nearby receiver. Yu used his expertise in parallel communication to show that the colliding signals from multiple computers could be efficiently processed to accurately interpret stolen data. For Guo, the team’s findings demonstrate the need for mitigating measures to protect computers from this potential security threat.
